Wounded cop who detonated vintage bomb faces charges

The Philippine National Police (PNP) yesterday said the policeman who was wounded in a bomb explosion in Taguig City on Wednesday will face charges as he was among the policemen who decided to detonate a vintage bomb without the permission of their superior.

PNP-Special Action Force (SAF) director Chief Supt. Catalino Uy yesterday confirmed PO2 Arnold Mayo, 39, might face charges for participating in the incident.

Mayo along with two other members of SAF identified as PO2 Elizalde Bisaya and PO3 Jose Toralba brought a vintage bomb to an iron works shop in Lower Bicutan, Taguig City.

Investigation showed the three SAF personnel brought the vintage bomb to the iron works shop to defuse it. An iron works shop boy used a welding machine that caused the explosion.

Four people, including Bisaya and Toralba and the iron works shop owner identified as Crisanto Daguio and Riza Romualdo, owner of a bakery in the area, were killed while 14 others were wounded.

Mayo suffered second-degree burns in the face and is now confined at the Quezon City Memorial Medical Center.

Killed on the spot were Bisaya and Daguio. Declared dead on arrival at the Taguig Pateros District Hospital were Toralba and Romualdo.

Meanwhile, 12 of the 14 wounded were allowed to go home from the Taguig Pateros District Hospital.

The two wounded, Mayo and one Angelica Coben, 17, were transferred to separate hospitals in Quezon City. Mayo was transferred to the QCMMC while Coben was brought to the National Orthopedic Hospital due to serious injuries in her leg.

Uy claimed the three SAF men had no authority to defuse the bomb.

“Kaya lang dahil namatay yung dalawang pulis na involved kaya ang survivor (Mayo) ang may liability at siya ang haharap sa kaso,” Uy explained.

The standard operating procedure in such operation is authorities should first secure the area when defusing a bomb.
