Serbian team pulls out of tiff with Azkals

A RANKING club team from Serbia won’t be able to play a friendly match with the Philippine Azkals national football team when they go to the Middle East in February to attend a series of training camps.

Philippine Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta, however, said that despite
the absence of Serbian squad Partizan Belgrade, the Azkals can still look forward to playing friendly matches against other competitive club teams.

“Nag-cancel ang Partizan Belgrade because their coach did not get a visa. But there are three other friendlies they can look forward to,” said Araneta.

The Azkals will have their training camp from Feb. 5 to 17 in Dubai and Qatar.

While in Dubai, the Azkals will have two friendlies, plus another one in Qatar.

The first is with Al Ahli Sports Club on Feb. 13 in Doha, and the second one is against the Qantas Airline under-23 team on Feb. 16 in Dubai.

The friendly with Partizan Belgrade was supposed to take place on Feb. 6 in Abu Dhabi. But ex-Chelsea coach Avram Grant, who is now handling Partizan Belgrade, was not able to get a visa.

Coach Hans Michael Weiss is now assembling a pool of young talented players for the camp.

“It’s very important to see that we’ve got a pool of young interesting players together. I’m very glad with them, there’s very good spirit, fighting spirit,” said Weiss after the Azkals’ charity match with the Icheon Citizens of South Korea last Saturday.
