TV5 Action Princes Oyo Sotto and JC de Vera take on the classical roles of Theo Braganza and Gardo Valiente in the Kapatid network’s remake of the classic drama series Valiente.
Originally portrayed by Tirso Cruz 3rd and Michael de Mesa, the teledrama was one of the
most successful afternoon programs that ran for about three years (1992 to 1995) on ABS-CBN and continued for two more years on GMA 7.
Now after two decades, TV5 brings back the most loved and talked about drama series to a new generation of audiences.
Valiente revolves around the remarkable story of the Braganza and Valiente families—whose lives are intertwined in their search for truth and genuine love.
Gardo Valiente is a young but destitute lad who works for Hacienda Braganza and is a loyal friend to Theo, a rich and stubborn heir who has special interests in guns. Maila Braganza (Nadine Samonte), the youngest among the Braganza brood, falls in love with Gardo, but her scheming sister Leona (Nina Jose), will do anything to get in the way of Maila and Gardo.
This will be the third project for Sotto after Midnight DJ, and the primetime series Bangis. De Vera on the other hand was the lead star of the “actionserye” Ang Utol kong Hoodlum.
Although Sotto says he was able to watch some of the original episodes, he says he was still quite young to remember its entirety. “Naaalala ko lang talaga, yung kanta niya.”
It was Oyo’s father Vic Sotto who sang the original theme song of the series and was again chosen to sing the theme for the remake.
Also joining the cast is the original Gardo Valiente himself Michael de Mesa, who returns to the country just to be part of the project. He left the country in 2009 to live in the US, where he now works as a marketing professional.
De Mesa will now be playing the role of Damian Valiente, a trusted worker in Hacienda Braganza and the one who serves as Gardo’s (JC De Vera) father.
According to de Mesa, although he really wanted to be part of the project, he was reluctant at first because it meant leaving his secure job in the US.
“It was hard because of the ongoing recession. Everybody values their job and I feared that if I left for a long time, I might lose my job. But then, when I spoke to my boss, it was a good thing that he understood. That was the sign that I was waiting for: If he said yes, then that meant I should really push through with Valiente.”
De Mesa said he felt flattered that the production team still considered him to be part of such a big cast which also includes Jaclyn Jose and Mark Gil and reunites him with Gina Alajar, John Regala and director Joel Lamangan.
His advice to JC De Vera? “Always be serious with your craft, never stop learning, and always keep your feet on the ground.”
