LUCENA CITY, Quezon, Philippines — This city shares the same disaster-prone topography with Cagayan de Oro City (CdO) and, thus, is at risk of suffering the same fate during a heavy rainstorm, a Department of Education (DepEd) official said Saturday.
Dr. Dante Diamante, DepEd City Medical Officer, said the flash flood that virtually wiped out the entire villages in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities can happen here because of the same topography.
Diamante said the city is besieged by two big rivers, Iyam and Dumacaa, which are both connected to Tayabas Bay, and this may cause flash floods if high tide and heavy rainfall occurs at the same time.
Diamante recalled that on Nov. 3, 2005 when typhoon “Rosing” struck this city, the two rivers overflowed and inundated the entire city.
He said his observation was brought to the attention of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC), chaired by Lucena City Mayor Barbara Ruby Talaga during its regular meeting recently.
