Lim urges parents to register early their kids in school

Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim yesterday urged parents in the city to register their children early for the school year 2012 to 2013 to avoid last- minute rush and make sure that all children of school age will be in school come June.

Lim also directed division of city schools superintendent Dr. Ponciano Menguito to launch a massive and citywide information campaign so that parents with children of school age will be aware that the early registration begins tomorrow, Jan. 28.

Menguito said the mayor’s order is in line with Department of Education Order No. 4, series of 2012 which declares Jan. 28, 2012 as the “Early Registration Day” for schoolyear 2012-2013 whose objective is to provide education for all and to achieve its “Millennium Development Goals.”

Thus, under the theme “Makapag-aral ay Karapatan Mo, Magpalista Ngayong Enero,” Menguito said the division of city schools in Manila will hold its early registration day tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in all public elementary and secondary schools.

To be enrolled in the elementary level are the following: Kinder — born Oct. 31, 2007 or earlier; Grade One — born Oct. 31, 2006 or earlier with or without Kinder experience; out-of-school children — those aged 6 to11 who have dropped out of school.

In the secondary level, those who can enroll are out-of-school youth aged 12 and above who have dropped out of school and, in the case of special education, those aged 6 to 18 with special needs and who have not been to school may enroll.

Menguito said prospective enrollees may enroll in the school nearest their residence and bring the birth certificate of the child as it is a requirement.

If the document is not available during the early registration day, it can be submitted either in June or within the school year.

Menguito said birth certificates are also required of other children and youth who have never been to school.

In the case of drop-outs, the parents may present their report card or certification letter signed by the parent or guardian to the teacher-in-charge of the registration.

Menguito said the DepEd has tapped the cooperation of local government units, barangay officials, parent-teacher associations, civil society or civic organizations and business sector for a massive advocacy campaign to get all children in school.

For inquiries relative to the campaign, he said those interested may contact DepED Manila communication unit at landline numbers 527-5180 and 527-2315.

Lim, who established free college education in Manila, said there is no reason for parents not to send their kids to school since the city provides free education from daycare to college.

Menguito expressed hope that the early registration in Manila will have a big turnout. It will be held nationwide for one day only and the data will be used by the central office to plan for the next school year.
