Atty. Felipe Gozon
MANILA, Philippines – GMA Network Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe Gozon can describe the rumor that the Kapuso network is for sale in a lot of words including "out of this world" and "very wild."
In PEP article posted Jan. 5, he laid out the only condition that would prompt him to sell the network.
"Kung P500 billion, ibebenta ko right now...kung may mag-o-offer ng P500 billion, kahit tulog ako, gisingin n'yo ako, I will sell. 'Pag below that, medyo iisipin 'ko muna," he was quoted as saying.
The rumor started in December last year where some "reported" that TV5 chairman Manny V. Pangilinan (MVP) offered to purchase the network for “P500 billion.”
To dismiss the talk, GMA Network announced in a statement last Dec. 27: "There is no truth to the rumor going around in social media sites and the internet that Mr. Manny Pangilinan has bought GMA Network. In fact, there is even no negotiation going on between GMA and Mr. Pangilinan regarding the latter's acquisition of GMA-7."
TV5 President and CEO Ray Espinosa also denied the rumor, according to InterAksyon.com, the online news portal of TV5.
However, in abs-cbnNEWS.com’s Dec. 27 report, MVP, also the chairman of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., was said to have declined to comment on speculation he's in talks to buy GMA Network Inc.
GMA’s revenue
Asked about the current financial situation of GMA Network, Gozon said: "Kung sa yaman, matagal na kaming mayaman, we don't brag about it anymore.
"[And] although last year, it has been admitted na medyo mababa ang net income namin compared to previous years...we think we are in the best position this 2012 to get the better part of the advertising budget."
He elaborated about the decline in income.
"Ang political ads namin for 2010 were more than P2 billion.Nag-increase kami ng regular advertising revenues, but if you consider the P2 billion, we had a shortfall of about P1 billion. Kung wala ‘yun, nag-increase kami ng P1 billion,” he said.
