MANILA, Philippines – Boxing trainer and commentator Teddy Atlas said undefeated American fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. should agree to a 50-50 split for a mega-fight against Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao.
Negotiations for a potential mega-fight between the two pound-for-pound kings fell apart anew
last week after Mayweather reportedly refused to accept a 50-50 split with Pacquiao.
Atlas said in a Boxing Scene interview that Mayweather’s refusal to accept the even split with Pacquiao was the wrong decision, given that the Filipino boxer is "probably the biggest name in boxing right now."
"I don't think anybody can make a case, if they are being honest and they are really sober, on how they are not going to give 50-50 to Pacquiao. You are talking about the guy who right now is the biggest engine in boxing," Atlas said.
Atlas added that Mayweather should be "happy to get 50-50."
"He's getting 50-50 in probably the biggest money fight in the history of the sport. That's doing good," he said.
A Pacquiao-Mayweather fight has long been considered as the most lucrative fight that can be made in boxing today, and both fighters can make around $50 million each.
Atlas noted that he had supported Mayweather during the negotiations with Pacquiao, including the American fighter's demand of a random drug and urine testing. In this issue, however, Atlas advised Mayweather to accept the even split.
"You can't say that you refuse to go 50-50 if you're Mayweather. You just can't do it," he said.
