AIR21, previously known as Shopinas.com, will get the privilege of having Smart-Gilas 7’1” center Marcus Douthit as import in the coming Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup.
PBA commissioner Chito Salud made the confirmation Wednesday night and shared to
mediamen what transpired during a board meeting on the same day.
“The PBA board of governors decided to step aside and allowed Air21 to have the rights on Douthit since nine of the 10 teams competing already have their respective imports,” said Salud.
“Now, Air21 will have the rights to negotiate with Douthit, who will be back here Feb. 18 the earliest. Douthit has expressed his interest to play in the PBA next conference. If ever Douthit and the Air21 management fail to reach an agreement, Douthit cannot see action next conference,” Salud added.
Air21 team manager Jovie Saddul told Manila Standard that they hope to reach an agreement within the next 24 hours.
“If we don’t come to terms with Douthit, we will have someone coming in to play for us,” added Saddul, referring to Taj Gray, the European League veteran, who has already agreed in principle to play for the Express.
