The baffling Kardashian phenomenon

Some people wonder if the Kardashians are aspiring for world domination. Some see it as an American success story and while most people like me and Barbara Walters are simply baffled at why the Kardashians became such a huge industry. Today, almost every media outlet
in the US considers the Kardashians major headlines. Even US President Barrack Obama knows who they are! Whether it's regular news entertainment news or lifestyle news, the Kardashians are just about everywhere. In fact, last year they reportedly made $65 million. Seriously I am not a Kardashian hater or lover. It just baffles me that a sex tape scandal can evolve into job security for the whole family.

Let's take a look at a few things. Kim, Khloe and Kourtney basically own Dash boutique and reportedly started making a living ( before they got famous ) by selling clothes in an upscale strip mall in the city of Calabasas, California. Also, during her early years Kim was palling around with starlets like Paris Hilton and trying out a career as a stylist. This makes total sense since she can increase her sales in Dash or use it stepping stone to being famous. It kind of makes you wonder that Kim and Paris both got famous after being victims of a sex tape scandal. After Kim's sex scandal, she magically gets a reality show and lets "momager" Kris handle it. It turns her family into a multi-million dollar business.

In some ways, I admire the mother Kris for her business acumen but come on, even her young teenage daughters are being hawked into the business. It makes you think about what former Olympian Bruce Jenner really does for a living. We all know the women in the family work their butts off even if it's just posing for the red carpet, but what does he do? Whatever it is, it seems to me, it's a pretty cozy life.

You must admit they are a good looking family, but some more than others. Kim is clearly the most beautiful and her young teenage sisters are pretty too. Khloe is the most interesting while Kourtney is supposedly the smart one. The three women have launched a Kardashian line of clothing in a major department store in the US. It supposedly sells really well. But that may soon change because recently, they were embroiled in a scandal in line with how they manufacture their clothes. Their brother Rob has gotten popular as well in Dancing with the Stars and even Kourtney's boyfriend Scott Disick and Khloe's husband Laker Lamar Odom are in the mix.

The big question is: what exactly makes them celebrities? What do they do? They are neither actors, singers or entertainers they are the new breed of Hollywood. They are stars of reality TV. Obviously, they are more fashionable than the stars of the Jersey Shore but they have one thing in common with Snooki and The Situation. They stand for nothing else but being reality TV stars. The only difference is that "momager" Kris is great at marketing the whole family, herself included. Each of them gets a piece of the pie and everyone is happy.

Their reality show features them like a normal happy family with sisters bickering and being supportive of each other but it's a bit over the top and are obviously portrayed as a wealthy family. Perhaps the show's popularity can be attributed to the current economic recession in the US. It becomes a form of escapism for the masses whose lives were deeply affected by the economic downturn. Sort of window watching their fantasy lives. And it helps that most of them are easy on the eyes. If any of them show up in an event, they are paid thousands of dollars for practically breathing the air around you. I'm sure even temperamental Scott Disick, Kourtney's baby daddy, is enjoying some of the benefits of being with the family.

From endorsement deals, appearance fees and cameo appearances the whole family has attained celebrity status and has become a household name. Obviously, their lives are scrutinized in a microscopic way but it's a small price to pay for $65 million a year. But the question remains: what exactly did they do to attain celebrity status? Celebutantes are given entry status to the celeb world but staying there and achieving A-list status requires major marketing skills and fortunately for the Kardashian clan, "momager" Kris has it.
