Armymen champs a 4th time

PADDLERS from the Philippine Army ruled the fourth leg of the 2011 Philippine Annual Dragon Boat Championships Sunday at the Seaside Blvd. of the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

The Armymen, led by team skipper Usman Anterola, led from start to finish in the finals of the
men’s 200-meters, 22-man standard boat race, clocking their fastest time of 48 seconds in the entire race, also known at the Cobra Energy Dragonboat Regatta.

It was the fourth straight year for the Armymen to retain the men’s top honors.

“Masaya kami at nakaulit kami,” said Anterola of the outcome of their participation in the final leg of the 2011 series, which was called off last month.

Paddlers from La Salle were second to the Armymen in 50.51 seconds, while the Onslaught Racing Dragons took third in 50.43 seconds.

Triton topped the women’s side in 59.77 seconds, with La Salle settling for second (1:04.89) and Onslaught third (1:07.61).

La Salle claimed the mixed final honors, after crossing the finish line in 53.10 seconds. The Manila Ocean Park paddlers made it to second in 54.43 seconds, and Triton was third in 54.74 seconds.

Anterola said the Armymen had little difficulty taking charge in the final race, after the team chose not to take a breather midway in the contest. They notched a time of 48.32 seconds when they beat La Salle (49.59) in the opening heat.
