PH bets brace for a different version of chess

FILIPINO woodpushers will be bracing for a different version of the game of chess in the 2013 Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar

Playing coach Eugene Torre said this after the national team came home with one gold, four silvers and three bronze medals in the recent 26th SEA Games in Indonesia.

“Marami kaming plano na magpa-tournament nito next year. Hinihintay lang namin na maging official ito sa SEA Games,” said Torre.

He said he received word during the biennial meet that the Burmese version of chess called Sittuyin will be played in the games two years from now.

Sittuyin is a chess-related game, which is a drew its origins from the Indian game of Chaturanga in the 8th century AD.

Like the regular chess game played in Europe, the Sittuyin board consists of 64 squares, eight rows and eight columns, and without alternating colors. It also consists two diagonal lines across the board known as “sit-ke-myin”

The official colors of the pieces are red and black, and the pieces involved are the Min-gyi (king), equivalent to a chess king; Sit-ke (general), which is another variant of the queen; Sin (elephant), which stands for the bishop; Myin (horse) is the equivalent to a chess knight; the Yahhta (chariot) represents the rook; the Nè (feudal lord) is equivalent to a pawn.

Torre added that a better understanding of the game will enable Filipino woodpushers to have a chance to win medals in this unfamiliar discipline.
