MANILA, Philippines — A top fisheries expert at the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) says small farmers can benefit from innovations in the breeding of sabalo in inland ponds.
Speaking on condition of anonymity since his views may be taken as the official position of the NFRDI on the matter, the expert said the enhancement of the capability of the Finfish Hatcheries, Inc. (FHI) in Sarangani to supply nearly half of the total national demand for milkfish fry is “highly profitable but small fishermen need to develop their own methods to catch the fry, nurture them and assure themselves of supply any time of the year.”
He made the comment as NFRDI experts prepared to visit the finfish hatcheries in Pagbilao, Quezon, to observe the harvesting of fry.
“What is central to the propagation of the spawners is actually the protection of the ecosystem, which means we have to ensure that estuaries are not polluted, and that the sabalo in the wild will not be slaughtered since they are the source of the eggs that supply the entire market,” he said.
