Convicted OFW executed in China


MANILA, Philippines — Convicted Filipino drug mule was executed at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Vice President Jejomar Binay announced.
Binay, who is also the presidential adviser on overseas Filipino worker (OFW) concerns,
reported the events that transpired through a live feed from Bali Indonesia, as a representative of President Benigno Aquino for the World Democracy Forum.
He said that at 7 a.m, a mass was officiated by a Filipino priest at the hotel where the family stayed.
At 8 a.m, Consul General Raly Tejada accompanied the family to visit the 35-year old Filipino convict whose name was withheld upon the request of the family. He was arrested in 2008 for carrying 1.495 kilos of heroin to China.
At 9:25 a.m, the promulgation was read at the Guilin Municipal Intermediate People’s Court, where the death sentence was read to him.
At 9:45 a.m, Binay bared that the last rites and communion were given to the family
At 10:15 a.m, the Filipino convict was taken to Louzhou County, a two-hour drive from the Guilin Municipal Intermediate People’s Court where the execution will take place.
Binay said that members of the family even the embassy officials were not allowed to witness the execution.
Binay assured that the government will shoulder the expenses of the family including the transportation of the body back to the Philippines.
He said that the body is expected to be brought back by next week, either Tuesday or Wednesday. Though, the family expects to see the body Thursday, Binay added.
He also said that the family will leave China today to head back to the Philippines.
Despite this, Binay did not give assurance as to the benefits of the Filipino convict since he is not a member of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and based on records, he went to China as a tourist, Binay said.
