President Benigno Aquino 3rd said he is opposed to a request for house arrest for ex-President and Pampanga Rep. Gloria Arroyo.
“Why house arrest? What’s the point of making an arrest (if we are going to allow house arrest anyway)?” Aquino said in an interview.
“Since they (Arroyo camp) are insisting that she is suffering from a medical condition, a hospital should be the best venue,” he added.
Mrs. Arroyo is now under hospital arrest at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City (Metro Manila) for her alleged role in the 2007 senatorial elections. She is facing an electoral sabotage complaint, a non-bailable case, before a regular court.
Mr. Aquino, however, said that the government is not curtailing Arroyo’s rights in opposing her petition for house arrest.
“We will afford her her rights. We will protect them to the fullest extent possible,” the President said, but stressed the need for “closure” on the electoral fraud charges.
“I think the hospital is already adequate,” he added.
