One of the war's inventions -- the tank --
is put on display at Toronto's City Hall in 1915. The British built the
first tanks in that year in order to gain some advantage in the
ever-increasing trench warfare. The Mark 1 tank had a crew of eight,
with four machine guns and two 6-pounder guns.
Remembrance Day most often brings us the images of world wars past, of battlefields and trenches and the warriors who fought in foreign lands.
But we can’t forget that the wars were fought on the home front, too. In their own way, the people left behind in Canada’s towns and cities we’re every bit as invested in the wars as their sons and husbands who took up arms.
To mark this year’s week of Remembrance, we bring you images of Toronto as it was during World War I and II, compiled from the Toronto Star files and city archives. -The Star
