MANILA, Philippines — Maika Tanpoco shocked second seed Sanae Ohta of Japan, 6-2, 6-3, to barge into semis of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Circuit Week 1 Friday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Tanpoco, 16, banked on her strong forehand volleys to keep the Philippine flag afloat as other Pinoy bets were eliminated. She will next face Nastassia Rubel of Belarus.
Fil-Vietnamese Tamitha Nguyen and Marian Capadocia, however, fell to their respective rivals. Nguyen lost to Miki Kobayashi of Japan, 6-2, 6-3, while Capadocia yielded to Eden Silva of Great Britain, 7-5, 6-2.
Jurence Mendoza also got the boot in the boys’ side, losing to Taiwan’s Yu Cheng-Yu, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
