FILIPINO Roxanne Mae Resma entered the girl’s singles main draw of the 2011 Philippine Investment Management Inc. - International Juniors Tennis Championship Junior’s Circuit Week 1 tournament on Monday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Manila.
The 14-year old Cagayan De Oro native relied on her crisp backhand volleys to pull-off a 6-1, 6-2 win against American Samantha Um, who had a hard time coping with the hot weather.
“I’m very happy to qualify in the main draw and I’m hoping to do better in the next stages,” said Resma, who also beat Russian Elizaveta Tregubova, 6-3, 6-3, in the first game of the qualifying bouts last Sunday.
In the other matches, Russian Tatyana Grigoryan routed Filipino Isabella Mendoza, 6-0, 6-0, while Anna Grigoryan bashed Australian Melissa Esguerra, 6-3, 6-0, to also advance in the singles’ main draw.
In the boy’s singles event, Filipino Fritz Verdad defeated Arman Aymond of Singapore, 6-3, 7-5 to qualify in the main draw.
The other main draw qualifiers were Philipp Moritz of Austria who walloped Argil Lance Canizares, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, Filipino Joachim Samson who thumped compatriot Dheo Tala-tayod, 4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-3, and Taiwanese Ha Yun Chen who trounced Filipino Marcen Angelo Gonzales, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.
