THE national men’s team is expected to win at least three gold medals in the chess competitions of the 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia.
National Chess Federation of the Philippines executive director Jayson Gonzales said this following the return of the sport in the biennial meet after it was scrapped in 2007 and 2009.
Gonzales believes that Filipino woodpushers will most likely excel in the rapid, standard and team event.
“The team is looking forward to a good finish after they spent their time training in Tagaytay,” said Gonzales.
The national woodpushers will be bannered by super grandmaster Wesley So, GMs Mark Paragua, Darwin Laylo, John Paul Gomez, Oliver Barbosa and Joey Antonio.
The national squad recently got a boost when Barbosa was officially conferred a GM norm by the FIDE, together with Richard Bitoon during the 82nd FIDE Congress in Krakow, Poland last week.
Barbosa, who has an ELO rating of 2571, was conferred the title following his performance in the DYTM Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah Invitational Masters at the Swiss Garden Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last September.
The national men’s squad, together with the national women’s team are preparing for the coming SEA Games by seeing action in the national inter-cities and age group competitions, which start today in Tanauan, Batangas.
