MANILA, Philippines — Experts from the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) Friday disclosed that the dreaded “Panama” disease (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense) which is now affecting hectares of banana plantations in Mindanao can be managed.
Dr. Patricio S. Faylon, executive director of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) of the DoST, said that recent dialogue with stakeholders and through careful studies of banana in the country revealed positive results in curbing the menace brought about by Fusarium wilt, more popularly known as “Panama” disease.
Faylon said that both short and long-term solutions have already been laid down by the pool of experts identified by DoST to combat the disease. He said one of the most direct steps recommended by the group was early detection and eradication.
