Four gunmen kidnapped Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos from his home in Valencia, Venezuela Wednesday, according to Spanish-language newspaper El Nacional.

The kidnapping was confirmed by Ramos's winter baseball team, Tigres de Aragua, through its official Twitter account. The 24-year-old was planning to play in roughly 10 games with the Tigres starting Thursday.

"They are still waiting for the kidnappers contact the family," a source told El Nacional. "At the moment the only thing they have done is to inform the police."

Ramos was taken from his home by four people, who put in him in a green car and sped away, a report by El Universal said.

Ramos became the Nationals starting catcher as a rookie in 2011, batting .267 with 15 home runs and 52 RBI. -Toronto Sun
