A MYSTERY donor has armed the National Bureau of Investigation with over 500 units of the .40 caliber Glock handguns.
NBI director Magtanggol Gatdula refused to identify the donor, saying only that the US-made automatic pistols were donated through the NBI Foundation Inc., non-profit group composed of NBI personnel.
In an interview, NBI Security Management Division chief Special Investigator Mario Garcia told reporters the donation of the Glock pistols was timely since Gatdula intends to upgrade all the firearms of the NBI agents to make them at par with the weapons being used by criminal elements.
He also said Gatdula had issued an order to make the weapons uniform for all NBI line agents and division chiefs, especially during operations.
The .40 caliber Glock handgun are now the standard sidearm of US Federal Bureau of Investigation and Drug Enforcement Administration agents, Gatdula said.
“All the .40 Glock pistols are already in the NBI custody. We are just waiting for the implementing rules for the issuance of the new firearms,” Garcia told reporters.
He said an NBI agent will get a Glock pistol as replacement but will retain a secondary weapon, either a .380 caliber pistol or a .38 caliber revolver.
But the NBI agent will need to surrender his primary weapon, the .45 caliber pistol, Garcia added.
