FIDE, the world’s governing body in chess, has officially conferred Grandmaster titles on Oliver Barbosa (2571) and Richard Bitoon (2515) during the 82nd FIDE Congress in Krakow, Poland last Oct. 15 to 22, bringing to 16 the total number of Filipinos who have achieved the feat.
Barbosa, a native of Taytay, Rizal, reached the GM norms after collecting seven points that won for himself the title in DYTM Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah Invitational Masters at the Swiss Garden Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last September.
The former Southwestern University stalwart Bitoon, who hails from Medellin, Cebu, earned his third and final GM norm also during the DYTM Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah Invitational Masters where he tallied 6.5 points good for third place.
Barbosa and Bitoon thus join the elite circle of Filipino GMs that includes Eugene Torre, Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr., Buenaventura “Bong” Villamayor, Nelson Mariano II, Mark Paragua, Wesley So, Darwin Laylo, Jayson Gonzales, John Paul Gomez, Joseph Sanchez, Roland Salvador, Rogelio “Banjo” Barcenilla Jr., Julio Catalino Sadorra and the late Rosendo Balinas Jr.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel Senador of Iloilo province and Edmon Grey Prado of Quezon City also gained mileage in their chess careers, with the former becoming an International Master and the latter achieving the International Arbiter (IA) title.
Barbosa also climbed to No. 2 in the latest Philippine-FIDE rating list for the month of November with an ELO rating of 2571, behind Wesley So, the country’s top rated GM who has an ELO rating of 2659. At third is 12-time national open champion Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. (2557).
Other Filipino woodpushers who made it to the top 15 are Paragua (No. 4, 2522), Sanchez (No. 5 2518), Bitoon (No. 6 2515), Sadorra (No. 7 2506), Gomez (No. 8 2506), Laylo (No. 9 2502), Torre (No. 10 2502), Barcenilla (No. 11 2501), Salvador (No. 12, 2500), IM Rolando Nolte (No. 13 2455), Villamayor (No. 14 2440) and IM Oliver Dimakiling (No. 15 2432).
