PALEMBANG, : Cyclist John Rene Mier grabbed the country’s 28th gold medal in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games here.
Mier, 19, dominated the men’s 30-kilometer point race in Subang, West Java. It was the national cycling team’s second gold medal after Alfie Catalan ruled the men’s 4,000-meter individual pursuit on Sunday.
The Philippines also got six silver medals courtesy of Marianne Mariano (women’s sanda 56 kgs.) of wushu, Grandmaster Wesley So (men’s individual) and Woman FIDE Master Rulp Ylem Jose (women’s individual) of chess, Cecil Mamiit and Treat Conrad Huey (men’s doubles) of tennis, Apryl Eppinger (women’s sprint race) of cycling, and the men’s dragon boat team (20-crew 2,000m race) while Jason Huerte, Junmar Aleta and reserve Rheyjey Ortouse gained a bronze medal in sepak takraw’s men’s doubles.
On Sunday, Sinag Pilipinas mauled Thailand, 85-57, for the gold medal while the national baseball team blanked host Indonesia to win the gold medal in the men’s division. The Filipino dribblers claimed its unprecedented 15th crown.
Boxers Charly Suarez (lightweight) and Dennis Galvan (light welter weight) were playing against Matius Mandiangan and Afdan Bachtila, both from Indonesia, as of press time.
Wushu’s Mark Eddiva and Edward Folayang were also gunning for gold medal in their respective weight classes.
Overall, the Philippines is at sixth with 28 golds, 52 silvers and 73 bronzes behind newly crowned overall champion Indonesia with 158 golds, 135 silvers and 124 bronzes. Thailand placed second with 99 golds, 87 silvers and 109 bronzes followed by Vietnam with 89 golds, 86 silvers and 95 bronzes, Malaysia with 54 golds, 45 silvers and 71 bronzes and Singapore with 42 golds, 44 silvers and 72 bronzes.
Myanmar improved to 16 golds, 23 silvers and 28 bronzes at seventh leaving Laos at eighth with nine golds, eight silvers and 35 bronzes, Cambodia at ninth with four golds, 11 silvers and 20 bronzes, Timor Leste at 10th with one gold, one silver and five bronzes and Brunei Darussalam at dead last with four silvers and seven bronzes.
