MANILA, Philippines — President Benigno S. Aquino III on Friday said he will not influence the decision of the court should the Pasay Regional Trial Court (RTC) decide on the motion of former President Gloria Macapagal – Arroyo for a house arrest.
In an ambush interview following the inauguration of the Climate Change Academy in Albay, Aquino said it would be up to the Pasay RTC to decide whether or not the former President would be allowed to go on house arrest.
“Prudence dictates that I should not comment on the matter… Being the Chief Executive of this land, I might be construed as trying to influence the decision of the court,” he said.
He said the decision whether to grant the former president’s request for a house arrest lies in the court as the Executive branch is only tasked to implement the law.
“They are the ones who are empowered to decide where to incarcerate people that were ordered arrested. We in the Executive we are tasked to…protect the implementation of the law,” he added.
