MANILA, Philippines – Three areas in northern Luzon have been placed
under storm signal number 1 as “Quiel” intensified from a tropical storm
into a typhoon, weather bureau PAGASA said on Friday.
In its latest weather bulletin, PAGASA said the areas of Cagayan,
Isabela and Babuyan Group of Islands are now under storm signal number 1
as Quiel moves closer to northern Luzon.
Quiel was packing maximum sustained winds of of 130 kilometers per
hour (kph) near the center with gustiness of up to 160 kph. It was last
spotted 770 kilometers (kms) east of Aparri, Cagayan.
The typhoon is forecast to move west at 22 kph.
Speaking to dzMM, PAGASA officer-in-charge and Department of Science
and Technology (DOST) Graciano Yumul said the typhoon is expected to hit
Cagayan between Saturday afternoon and night.
Yumul said Quiel, which has a diameter of about 400 kilometers, is expected to increase in size as it remains over the water.
Quiel is estimated to bring 15 to 25 millimeters per hour of rainfall within its diameter.
The weather chief said Quiel will exit the Philippines by Sunday. By
Saturday morning it will be 300 kms east southeast of Aparri, Cagayan.
